Manufacturing and water plants as targets

Remember that Florida water treatment plant story in Feb?  The one where someone was able to change the chemical levels remotely?   Turns out it also happened in March 2019 in Kansas.  A 22 year old is now accused of shutting down the region’s water cleaning system – and intending to do harm.   This was revealed in a statement from the Department of Justice.

I’m also going to highlight a story of a ransomware attack in Norway.     It’s a standard ransomware story – except here, the company went fully public with the attack, complete with videos of the teams switching to manual operations.    Officials say the collaboration has prevented numerous other attacks.

Why do we care?

I’m not going to dwell on the “it keeps happening” train.   I highlighted the difference specifically to showcase the alternative approach.  It’s a good long read to dig into how being transparent ended up with a different outcome.

Doing the same thing and expecting different results is insanity.   New approaches to security are exactly because of this reason.
