Amazon has announced an additional investment of four billion dollars in Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence startup founded by former OpenAI executives, bringing its total investment to eight billion dollars. This partnership designates Amazon Web Services as Anthropic’s primary cloud and training partner, with Anthropic utilizing Amazon’s Trainium and Inferentia chips for its AI models. Anthropic’s Claude chatbot has gained significant popularity, competing with offerings from tech giants like OpenAI and Google in a rapidly growing market projected to exceed one trillion dollars in revenue within a decade. Following a recent milestone in AI capabilities, Anthropic’s new features allow its technology to perform complex tasks on computers like human users. Despite its substantial investment, Amazon does not hold a board seat at Anthropic. The new funding follows a two-point seventy-five-billion-dollar investment made by Amazon earlier this year, marking its largest external investment.
Why do we care?
Designating AWS as Anthropic’s primary cloud provider strengthens Amazon’s cloud ecosystem by integrating cutting-edge AI capabilities. Anthropic’s use of Trainium and Inferentia chips could boost adoption of these AWS-exclusive technologies, creating a differentiation point from competitors like NVIDIA-based solutions. Breaking away from dependence on NVIDIA could drive down costs and open up that market.
By tying its AI ambitions closely to Anthropic, Amazon risks becoming dependent on the startup’s success. If Anthropic falters or its technology fails to meet expectations, Amazon’s position in AI could weaken relative to competitors with more diversified strategies. Generally, we want more competition in this space, which is why we care.
